Chapter Twenty-Five
Pauling looked at the cell phone in her hand.
She smiled.
It would be good to see Tallon again, she thought. It warmed her to think of being with him, and she once again thought about his desire to make their relationship more permanent.
Namely, by her moving in with him.
It wasnât going to happen, at least not now.
And it wouldnât be awkward. Neither of them were young romantics. They both saw it as one of many potential scenarios. For now, Pauling had a thriving, successful business to run.
Tallon was the semi-retired special forces soldier who spent a good amount of time running in the desert, or lifting weights and training for the next mission, whatever that might turn out to be.
Pauling honestly thought Tallon was wasting his time coming to see her. She disagreed with him; she didnât think of all the women Reacher had seen over the years, someone would try to find him through her. Mainly because she had absolutely no idea where the hell he was. If someone did try to use her for that purpose, they would be sorely disappointed.
In fact, she felt a little guilty that she hadnât pushed back more and tried to convince Tallon not to bother coming to New York.
But the truth was, she did want to see him. She was looking forward to it.
With no more client meetings scheduled for the day, Pauling decided to close up her office and start walking back to her place.
It was unseasonably cool and Pauling wished she had something to cover her bare arms, but since she didnât, she decided to generate her own heat by walking faster. Raising her heart rate quickly would do the trick.
She descended to the street, moving quickly and she practically launched herself onto the sidewalk, like a sprinter leaping from the blocks. Several faces turned to her in surprise as she banged open the doors to the street, but she veered to the right and walked quickly ahead.
Something bothered her, though, and she suddenly felt uneasy. As she walked, she tried to figure out what it was. Had she left something at the office? Forgot to set the alarm? Left her phone on the desk?
No, to all of those questions.
What was wrong?
The faces.
When sheâd pushed through the door onto the sidewalk her aggressiveness had caused several faces to react in surprise. Visually, she tried to picture them. Had she recognized someone?
She turned and looked behind her.
There was no one following her. The other pedestrians streamed past her and she didnât recognize any of them.
So what was bothering her?
It had been one face, she realized.
A manâs face.
Narrow. Pinched.
A white man, but he hadnât been looking at her.
Thatâs what had given her pause. All of the other people whoâd looked at her were actually focused on her with their eyes.
Only one face had kept their eyes downturned, as if he hadnât wanted to make eye contact.
Who was he?
Now, she let her hand hover near the butt of her pistol contained in a concealed holster in her purse.
